How the Ratio Works

Waist ÷ height. Both in the same unit. Below 0.550 passes. That is the whole standard, and it is the same number for every Soldier regardless of age, sex or component.

The army waist to height ratio replaced a system that had three moving parts — a screening table, a tape test converted into a body fat percentage, and a set of age and sex adjustments. Army Directive 2026-13 collapsed all of it into one division.

The truncation rule catches people out

The ratio is recorded to three decimal places and the digits past the third are disregarded, not rounded. A Soldier measuring 0.5509 does not round down to a pass — the result is recorded as 0.550, and 0.550 fails. The standard is strictly below the threshold.

Worked example

A Soldier is 70 inches tall with a 38-inch waist. 38 ÷ 70 = 0.5428…, recorded as 0.542. That passes with half an inch to spare, because the maximum passing waist at 70 inches is anything below 38.5 inches.

Why your weight is no longer part of it

Scale weight is not in the formula and is not part of the pass or fail determination. A heavily muscled Soldier who would have been flagged by the old weight table now passes on the ratio, which was one of the stated reasons for the change. The reverse is also true: a Soldier at a perfectly ordinary weight can fail if their waist is large relative to their height.

Target Waist by Height

Because the standard requires a ratio strictly below 0.550, your waist must come in under the figure shown, not match it. The ratio is recorded to three decimal places with no rounding in your favour: 0.549 passes, 0.550 fails.

The same figures as a one-page chart you can print and pin up before a weigh-in, or save to your phone. It carries the 0.550 rule, the truncation note and the measuring reminder, so it works without the site in front of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0.55 a pass or a fail?

A ratio of exactly 0.550 fails. The standard is a ratio of less than and not equal to 0.55, so 0.549 is the highest passing value.

Can I use centimetres?

Yes, as long as both measurements use the same unit. The ratio is unitless, so waist and height in centimetres produce exactly the same result as inches.

Does the Army measure my waist at the narrowest point?

No. For the WHtR standard the site is the navel, parallel to the floor. The narrowest-point site belonged to the old female tape test, which was rescinded.

What if I think the measurement was taken wrong?

A reading of 0.550 or above triggers a confirmation measurement the same duty day by a different team before any action is taken. You cannot challenge a result with a DXA, InBody or Bod Pod scan; Army Directive 2026-13 bars those.
